Description

Polyfoam is the class of materials representing the made foam (cellular) plastics (Gas - filled plastic). As the main volume of polyfoam occupies gas, density of polyfoam is significantly lower, than density of its initial raw materials (polymer). It causes rather high heat - insulating (in separately taken cell convection streams) and sound - proof (thin and rather elastic partitions of cells - the bad conductor of sound vibrations are almost impossible) properties of materials of this class.

Polyfoams were received practically from all most widely applied plastic (polymers) therefore the most known materials of this class are: polyurethane polyfoams, polyvinylchloride polyfoams, phenolformaldehyde, carbamide and formaldehyde polyfoams and polystyrene polyfoam.
Depending on structure of raw materials and technology of its processing it is possible to let out polyfoam of different density, mechanical durability, resistance to different types of influence. These factors also cause the choice of a concrete type of polyfoam for application in these or those conditions and the purposes.
Properties
• Polyfoams possess the high heat - insulating properties provided that the operation temperature (a concrete type of polyfoam) does not exceed temperature of its destruction (destructions, losses of structure);
• The polyfoams allowed for use in construction and for packing are not toxic materials, some of its types (for example, expanded polystyrene) are admissible for contact with foodstuff that allows to use widely it as packing of food and for disposable tableware (however it is necessary to inform the consumer on danger of his heating);
• Polyfoams extremely light materials thanks to what they are quite convenient in installation, laying and fastening, but the address can become complicated at flaws and when transporting;
Nevertheless at the same time:
- Expanded polystyrene easily collapses under the influence of many technical liquids (benzene, a dichloroethane, acetone) and their vapors that should be considered including at the choice of paints and varnishes in construction and finishing. In the lowest alcohols, low - molecular aliphatic hydrocarbons, simple air, phenols and water expanded polystyrene is insoluble.
- The fact of use of expanded polystyrene in construction of the concrete building still does not mean at all that someone beforehand took all necessary and sufficient measures against someone ever during existence of the building will apply under repair and finishing any materials (paints, varnishes, etc. ) the ketones containing, for example, (see "acetone") respectively leading to damage (destruction) of expanded polystyrene (with all that it implies! ). Respectively, theoretical applicability of expanded polystyrene in construction is strongly limited to the actual conditions of its application.
- In the market of the offer of building materials polyfoams which in concrete actual service conditions are capable (during use term) directly or indirectly meet to do harm as to consumer properties of the building (deterioration in heatisolation), and health of live organisms in it (including people).
• Polyfoam is not subject to influence of microorganisms, does not create a favorable environment for development of seaweed and mushrooms, however thanks to an uneven (rough) surface creates conditions for fixing on a product surface from polyfoam of colonies of microorganisms (seaweed);
• Ease of processing by means of any subsidiary tools, including saws, a knife, etc. , should not enter into dangerous delusion. Polyfoam is easily cut by a hot wire, however it demands observance of safety rules (works have to be performed in the open air or in the aired rooms).
(On indicators of physicomechanical properties of a plate of NOT polyfoam HAVE TO meet the standards stated in GOST 15588 - 86 as the specified GOST extends only to plates from expanded polystyrene. )
