The benzoic acid C6H5COOH — the simplest monobasic carboxylic acid of aromatic series.
The benzoic acid — white crystals, low solubility in water, it is good — in ethanol, chloroform and diethyl ether. The benzoic acid is, like most of others organic acid, weak acid (rka 4.21).
Pure acid has temperature of melting of 122.4 °C, temperature of boiling of 249 °C.
It is easily sublimated; it is overtaken with water vapor therefore it is not necessary to concentrate aqueous solutions of the benzoic acid evaporation.
Application:
- The benzoic acid is used as the chemical standard for calibration of calorimeters on temperature and heat capacity.
- The benzoic acid serves for receiving many reactants, such as: benzoyl chloride, benzoatny plasticizers, phenol.
- The benzoic acid and its salts are used at conservation of foodstuff.
- The benzoic acid is applied in medicine at skin diseases as outside antiseptic (antimicrobic) and antifungal (antifungal) means, and its sodium salt — as expectorant means.
- Ethers of the benzoic acid (from methyl to amyl) possess strong smell and are applied in the perfumery industry. Some other derivatives of the benzoic acid, such as, for example, chlorine - and the nitrobenzoic acids, are widely applied to synthesis of dyes.
